45.35 Sedona: A B Young Mountain and its outstanding features, challenges and views. 45.36 Hog Heaven,Twin Buttes location, mostly off trail.

North of the city on the 89A

On the way to the peak, could not find a way to climb this little butte. I schemed all the way up and partly on the way down and came up with a plan. Fortunately it worked otherwise I would have been a frustrated boy.

This is a quiet trail that crosses a river which is the first impediment; it is very steep and has no shelter from the sun. This discourages some but we find it ideal.

From the peak, it also provides a view of the San Francisco range in Flagstaff.

Most of the time, one is exposed on the edges (Jen going 'round the bend'), making it a superb experience. We would have done it again (on another day) but ran out of time. We had to rush back to be 'locked-down'. Could not persuade one of us to extend but we did have a rental reserved in San Diego.

The telephoto brings ground level closer to the peak.

Give him one more, for effort, and also, to save us from his whining.

And now, a return to south of the city, Twin Buttes area:

We go wondering off the trail and upwards. It always looks easier than it is. One day, we'll understand the concept.

...and this is the result. A little scary but in the end, a real high, a good challenge and a feeling of satisfaction.

It was good to get there and even better to return safely.

Cheers,

Jenni and Jeffrey
