'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

Hike 15.1: Hunting season opens at Waimea Canyon

The Waimea Canyon-An Overview, the scene of today's action

The new hazard on the trails is that of the hunter. In Africa, it used to be the big ‘White Hunter’, or the Bwana. Today, we have to be careful what we write even though we only wish the best for all good people. On the “canyon hike’ we came across the warning sign about hunting. ‘Great,’ we thought, now there are going to be bwanas shooting at us. It is becoming a very dangerous activity, this hiking. What to do?

We remembered last year in Morro Bay where we did the big favor for our beloved editor. Perhaps it is time for her to repay the kindness. We know very few read what we write—we understand why—but nevertheless, we continue to do it. Why does a scorpion sting? Back at Morro Bay, our editor was nervous about the mountain lions. We had previously been boasting of our tracking skills learned in the army—we held out to be a scout. She took advantage of our soft-heart and swollen head and made us feel the animal droppings for warmth. If it’s cool, of course the animal is long gone. Warm and you know that it was around recently. Steaming and you’d better lookout because he’s watching you fool around with his…possessions.

What’s the point of this? We think that as the editor owes us a favor, she should lead the hike. We’ll crouch behind her. It will even out things a little especially as she would not allow us into the car with our dirty hands at the time.

Here’s our first day of hunting along the stream at the bottom of the canyon….

Editor gets into the spirit as she multi-tasks

Hunter armed and ready to face the enemy. Stands at post warning that hunting season open. Enemy or prey unknown at this stage

Hunter stalking identified prey

Hunter peers at prey over boulder

Hunter moving stealthily

Hunter poised perfectly, moving in for kill

Hunter reverses course. Perhaps time to pray after all

Hunter being led on 'goose chase'

.
Hunter strikes but misses. (Apparently was very close)

Hunter springs over stream but drops weapon

Hunter stabs. Success. Examines result. Lettuce leaf. Hmm...Vegetables again tonight

Relaxing after the hunt

'Marlboro Man' lights up, thinking of a delicious salad

We did have fun. We also saw spectacular sights in the canyon during the hunt.
