'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

37.11 Introduction to Bulgaria. The world continues to fascinate, stimulate and excite two little people.

After 9 days in Bulgaria, it's still early days, but what we have seen, experienced, enjoyed and of course, as always, struggled up and down the slopes, has been magnificent. In fact, our second major hike in Rila National Park, mostly rock scrambling, as we mentioned before, is arguably a highlight of over 8 years of Hike-about. Eastern Europe continues to display its beauty and ruggedness of which it should be proud while we have also enjoyed the people we've met, both locals and visitors, immensely. It is our third visit to this part of the world in a little over a year although the first was to Slovenia only. We remember and give thanks to those who had the guts to take a 'brick out the wall'.

Before returning to publishing blogs from Romania, a few pictures of Bulgaria follow.

We received a warm welcome from the officer on duty … a little unusual.

We decide to go off-trail to reach the peak ridge, take a right turn and 'enjoy' some nippy moments at one of the 7-Rila Lakes. (Continues next photo)

Jen shows some guts (figuratively) as she free-climbs what felt like a wall, at times.

We thought one of the truly great scenes. We're still below Malyovitsa Peak but getting close. The backdrop of the mountains, some below, others above us, was gorgeous.

Our stay in Borovets was superb; we extended twice. Returning down a ski-slope, a short-cut, in poor weather.

Although difficult to judge, the elevations of Lakes Kidney and Eye, are different by a large amount.

The dual light backlit the mountains superbly—a favorite type of scene.

A view from the ridge of Maylovitsa, an alpine lake positioned at 8,100 feet.

Autumn beginning to show its colors.

We reach one of the lower lakes 'dual reflecting', after a long walk.

Not far to go to reach Maylovitsa Peak, a hiking/climbing highlight of 3,300 feet to reach 9,006 feet above sea-level.

Cheers,

Jeffrey and Jeffrey

After a tough, almost punishing but spectacular day, only a little Coke Zero allowed for a scruffy boy.

Another mind-blower. I'm fascinated by the high altidude lakes. Do you know if there's much by way of marine life in them? And what's this about the swig of Coke Zero? I'd have thought that after a scramble like that you deserved at least a gallon of Mahewu. Lovely pics again. I'm so impressed.
