'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

41.21 Utah: Salt Lake City: Gobbler's Knob, a hard to beat experience.

We are fortunate to enjoy many good, even great experiences, almost daily when we are on the slopes. This was no exception. In fact, the ascent of 3,100 or more feet, on a good trail, surrounded by outstanding flora with a challenging finish and views that would be hard to beat, made this a top tier hike.

When we were young, perhaps younger would be more appropriate, Rothmans Cigarette Company had an advert that the movie houses would display on the big screen immediately before the feature. The adverts, generally, were classy, powerful and probably made an impact. They were never enough to convince me to smoke but I haven't forgotten them. (As an aside, while I believe smoking is a distasteful habit, I find it equally distasteful and hypocritical that so much bad behavior is considered acceptable in modern times while condemning smoking. So much for freedom.) Let me get back on trail before sliding down this slippery slope. The advert referred to, announced that "When a person is tired of London then that person is tired of life.' I never related to the opinion even though I was stuck in one of the colonies, but I offer a counter. 'When a person is tired of nature, a person is really tired of life.'

Take a look at the scenes below and I'll respect your choice of London if that's the way you feel, but I'll still take a miss.

A magnificent position, from peak of Gobbler's Knob, one of the many varying views.

At the peak, Jenni peers down into the canyon.

Gorgeous part of the country, the world, as Jen descends from one of the false peaks. Mount Raymond, the peak ahead, is 5 feet less than Gobbler's Knob.

Exquisite flora at the top—worth the effort alone.

'Tip-toe through the meadow'. (Watch for snakes!)

A view from the top into the canyon. The road is 'Big Cottonwood Canyon' which separates the two ranges.

Sloping into the flowers and enjoying the view as well as a break.

Salt Lake in the distance, the city beyond the peak in front, one we climbed the previous week, Grandeur Peak.

One more of Mount Raymond, an unusual top. (Next time).

Genuine happiness following a great ascent.

Rich, lush and all natural.

Cheers,

Jenni and Jeffrey
