LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT

San Ramon: At first, I thought it needed explanation. Not true. Top Left: "You're kidding me. After hiking 4 miles from the base below, you still want to climb up there...and snakes...?" The stance revealed it all. The rest is self-explanatory, too. (Not part of the formal trail either).

'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

47.13 'Color ado': Avoid a trip, not fall in Durango, though on a fall trip. The Outer Loop of Animas Mountain.

The Animas River winds its way through Durango.

Perrin Peak in the middle, a hike we have enjoyed a couple of times.
Durango is a fascinating city which has the feel of a town. When we first visited, it appeared more of a cowboy/western destination. Preliminary judgement indicates it’s less cowboy and more of the usual. What’s interesting is that many houses are constructed in the forest, giving occupants a rural flavor. We like it.

It’s hard to believe the number of mountains surrounding the city—it’s a real issue for us because Jenni feels we have to attempt them all. You’ve got to have some sympathy for me. Talking of Jenni, we met her cousin Daverille and husband David, for a short while. We had not seen Daverille for near on twenty years, making it a pleasant reunion. South Africans are spread over the world, the few of us relatively speaking.

On our return from a great hike (another day), one I rated a top-ten, which Jenni disagreed with, and I conceded probably because there are already 83 hikes in our top-ten. Anyway, we noticed one of the cleaners at the motel had her two children assisting. The kids of each gender, probably 4 and 3 were as cute as children can be. One wants to sweep them up into one's arms and hug them. The two were helping Mom and were quite serious, too. It was a sight to behold. The sad part is that society will probably influence the kids to believe their Mom is not engaged in an ‘acceptable’ job or position, thereby lacking ‘status'—what a crock. Currently, they think the world of their Mom and her function as their exuberance bubbles over while helping her. Indeed! Should I be the Mom, I’d be proud of my kids and vice-versa. It brought an incredible day to a happy conclusion to engage with the little ones.

The Animas River continues to wind and wend its way through Durango.

Cheers,

Hi Claudia, I missed your comments so offer apologies. We try to hike 5-days per week but it depends on length and difficulty. We did two this week that tested us but the rest day between was great until midday. Then we become restless. As regards sport, we love it but participation rather than watching.
Once again, thank you for your interest, your well-received comments and always humor. Take care, Jeffrey
