LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT

'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

Water, water everywhere!

Hi All,

Tuesday 12th

A second day of sunshine in Oregon or at least between Zig Zag and Sisters. Please don’t laugh, brothers and sisters, these place names are not funny.

Today, we gave up counting the trees. Too many. Much easier to count our money—it is a finite number, in fact, most finite.

We were nearly arrested today. That’s right, you read it correctly. However, we still love Oregon. It’s just that one should not attempt to do what we did. It is a serious offense in these parts to do just that. We tried to pump gas into our car. This is something we do in all other states and up to now, we have got away with it. But not in Oregon. We thus pose the question: Why is this state different from all other states? We suppose you could say that is our fifth question. Answer: An attendant has to do it for you. We were flummoxed. Either because the Oregonians are lazy, ignorant (with respect) or are saving jobs, one is not permitted to help oneself. Of course, we offered to pay.

We asked the youngster: ‘How about inflating the tyres, checking under the Hood or washing the windows?’ ‘That,’ he replied, ‘we don’t do.’ Aha! We like principle when we see it. They allow us to dirty our hands—we are grateful that we still have that privilege in this state.

We loved the walk in the forest today, across the river and then the hike up to Ramona Falls. The spider-likes falls was fascinating, something unique. It was eight miles or so with an elevation gain that was gentle.

Carpeted Forest

This state is very special, then again, so are all the others we have visited and enjoyed. So what are we saying? We’ll think about it and let you know when we arrive at a suitable answer. While on the outside edge of the smallish mountain, we caught the occasional glimpse of Mount Hood. You might have gathered that we have a soft spot for this hard rock with its glaciers and views into the tree- studded valleys.

Clowning About!

After the hike, we set off for Sisters, near Bend, following the suggestion of Nora Laiken to attempt climbing or hiking the Three Sisters. We’ll let you know all about these ‘girls’ soon.

Cheers,

Jenni and Jeffrey
