'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

Hike 2: Waihee Ridge, a Rainforest in Maui

Glimpse after mist movement

Editor on Ridge...happy, too

Quick break in mist, clouds and rain

‘It makes no sense to throw a tantrum, you’re not a child,’ our editor generously conceded. ‘After today’s hike, we’ll pass by the car rental company and ask them to swop “the piece of iron” as you call it for a proper car. Do you feel better now?” Sometimes our editor develops an attitude that puts us in our place. Of course, we don’t much like that. At least, we have a decent motor car. We are now debating whether our editor should ride upfront with ‘the child’.
Have you got the torch..the flashlight?

Yesterday was a day of sunshine and extreme wind. So today we covered ourselves with sunscreen and swallowed a few ‘tums’—must be the Hawaiian food. Our editor rolled her eyes again—we suppose she’s right. Anyway, we headed north to the part of the island that is extremely wet. We had wasted our time with the sunscreen. The route was tricky and we did lose our way. Go figure! Directions will be the “death of us”. ‘Pop in there and see if they can guide us to the trailhead,’ we suggested. It turns out that we had stopped at a mortuary. Well, we take help wherever we can get it.
Not likely to rain--I have that feeling

Weather-generous for a moment

We debated whether to hike as it was raining hard, low clouds were hanging about ominously, the mist was moving in vigorously but otherwise it was a perfect day. Have faith we thought but a rain jacket might be useful, too. How could we not give it a try? In the end, it was a great day filled with spectacular sights in the rainforest when the weather allowed, a steep climb and a difficult return down a slippery slope. We each had an occasion when the feet slid swiftly under us and found ourselves sitting in the mud. The 5-6 mile hike was not long but with 1600 feet elevation gain on a wet trail, it was exciting enough. Should the sun shine in this part of Maui next week, we’ll try it again.

On our travels, we always have an eye out for snakes and bears, in fact, four eyes. At the end of the trail, we came across a cow, maybe it was a bull (we didn’t look closely) that gave us the ‘once over’ and was quite aggressive and intimidating. However, we were never in doubt, especially while cowering behind our beloved editor.
On the way down, we could see the edge

Cheers,

Jenni and her ‘Bull’.
