Arriving at the top.
We completed the hike in the early stages of our visit to this city of amazing mountains and lakes but not roads. On the day, we climbed some 2,600 feet as we went beyond Refugio Lopez, the accommodation hut situate on the mountain top alongside a small pond. Because of further potential action above it, we intend returning to enjoy more of the scrambling which begins where the initial part of the hike ends. Regarding refugios, it seems in the case of all, but one in the region, a person may arrive and accommodation will be available. Usually, in other countries we have to book ahead which affects one's flexibility. This system is terrific although somewhat more primitive when compared with many other regions.
Unfortunately, as we write, the weather has taken a turn for the worse. After two glorious weeks of weather, high winds are gusting, the temperature has dropped dramatically and rain has appeared. Although we are nearing the end of summer, it looks like winter has made an early appearance. We hope this not to be true and that the weather will realize it's made a premature error. Mid-April seems the correct time for change, hopefully, not now.
Heading back down.
Went wall climbing above the refugio.
Peering through the gorge.
Gives a perspective of the refugio on the mountain top. (Jenni sitting at left-center).
On trail, as we move up, the visuals are spectacular.
"Stopped into a 'pub', we passed along the way, California dreamin' ". This is typical of the 'luxuries' found on the European mountains and hut system.
One of my favorites.
Cheers,
Jenni and Jeffrey
