LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT

San Ramon: At first, I thought it needed explanation. Not true. Top Left: "You're kidding me. After hiking 4 miles from the base below, you still want to climb up there...and snakes...?" The stance revealed it all. The rest is self-explanatory, too. (Not part of the formal trail either).

'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

49.05/49.06/49.07 California: San Diego: Cowles Mountain, mixing business and pleasure plus across town, Ramona Lake and then Lake Poway.

The target Cowles Mountain from the north.
Downtown San Diego from the peak.
Whether one believes the incredible technology available encourages humans to behave better or worse, it certainly provides opportunities for a person to conduct business or general communications from remote places. We remember a trip to London in the late nineties when I used AOL to undertake financial work. This allowed me to carry out many business functions which still continues to this day. The difference being that one can undertake many activities online in even more remote places than earlier, including on mountain peaks. Should there be a telephone signal, then there is internet life.

This brings us to a typical day when one can mix business and pleasure. I should admit that until the pandemic hit, I never used the internet on trails and seldom the phone. For instance, I awoke early this morning, undertook some business operations, got dressed, collected some breakfast from downstairs, departed with Jenni from our suite at 8:15am, reached the peak at 10:30 or so, purchased and sold some stocks, returned to the trailhead, ate breakfast together and undertook a few more trades before returning home.

It still tickles me to this day what can be done. As an example, I purchased Newmont Mining stock at the peak of Cowles Mountain and sold it a couple of hours later from our suite (not typical). I was thinking: Imagine buying a mining share, going 1,000 feet underground as I once did and deciding to sell it from there.

These days I don't know which is work and what is recreation. The latter makes us incredibly tired and exhilarated whereas the former can be tiring and at times frustrating. It's quite a life especially when one gets it right...occasionally. Thankfully, I have my sounding board/special person with me to offer advice and dry my tears on occasion. Lucky boy, indeed!

Is it spring or autumn?
With a slight change in angle, note the background of each photo.
Mission Bay...we think.
Lake Murray from the peak.
Earlier in the week, a hike at Blue Sky, Ramona Lake.
A need to show off as she reaches a minor peak. One wonders from where she attains that streak.
Now we've seen everything. The charming Dr. Snyder, friend and 'kids'. Each hike, each day, more of the world is revealed. Nice!
In all the years we've hiked at Lake Poway/Mount Woodson, we've never taken this path. Nice view of the lake and surroundings despite the poor visibility.
Cheers,

Jenni and Jeffrey
