LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT

Eastern Cape, South Africa: Storms River region.

'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

The latest ruin at Machu Picchu.

A few pictures from a trip some 7 years earlier.

Varied ruins of Machu Picchu. We still had 2,000 feet to climb after setting out from Agua Caliente.

Main Street.

When I need reminding of how fortunate I am, pictures like this one (and many more) provide a sharp jolt. Some of these fellows never make it out the Andes Mountains.

Observing a really fresh breakfast, standing outside the kitchen, in the Andes.

Out and about in Poway: Mount Woodson, Lakes Poway and Ramona. In San Marcos, Double Peak Mountain and some water, too.

Ocean, density and lake.

Another lake on the other side of the mountain.

'Who are you looking at, son?'. Observing an Osprey at Lake Poway (with attitude).

The damn wall of Ramona Lake...should be dam but just just in case, select your option.

Now we're talking density...or maybe, dense.

Jenni's driving me up the wall and taking the gap...thank goodness.

First stop on the way down.

Showing off its balance for the wonderful colors, at this time of year.

We think it's unique. A headless Osprey. Must have died after arrival. Obviously, did not read or understand Rudyard Kipling's "IF". (Truth be told, I think we have lost the concept of what he wrote).

Climbing up to reach the dam wall opposite Ramona. This is Lake Poway's.

Does not appear that friendly. As our late friend, Mannie Edelstein might add: "Is it something I said?"

Only representation from Mount Woodson hike.

A view of Lake Ramona, below Mount Woodson.

Looks exclusive around the water...in San Marcos (north of San Diego.)

Returning from one of my less intelligent moves but sure got the heart pumping.

Lake Ramona, a body of water near Poway Lake. There are a number of dams, lakes and reservoirs in dry San Diego that many people do not see or even know of.

47.43 Utah: Masa Back and back and no doubt, we'll be back.

Reaching our destination. Is Utah diverse or what?

A couple of weeks before this hike near Moab, we were hiking in Durango and we mentioned a squeaking hip. Where's an orthopedic surgeon when you need one, especially on a mountain. Fast forward and we were finishing another extraordinary hike when we saw 3 fellows standing around a truck with a fourth lying on the ground, obviously feeling sick or tired or maybe, both. They were cyclists. The clue was the bikes on the truck. Pretty observant, huh!

One thing led to another and we had, which occurs frequently, an interesting conversation. The guy on the ground recognized our accents which always creates an opening. His buddies did not pay him much attention because he was, after all, a dentist. Who loves teeth guys? (With deep apologies to a great dentist, Derek Lichter.) The other three were medical doctors, the one an orthopedic surgeon. In case you missed it, that was the climax. Shows you. Never know who'll you meet--just have to get the timing correct.

When the day begins with reflections, I know it's a great start.

Jen reaches the endpoint. We climbed higher and then dropped down so we could see the river again. The magnificent Colorado.

Continuing our pursuit of the River...now we notice there's an easier way to follow it. "Jen, please get the car."

The movie set of the 'Rocky' series.

Jen about to hit a wall. Relief for one of us.

Taking a walk on the wild side.

"Where's everyone? I'm a people person--can't stand this loneliness any longer."

Going round the bend in step.

"It's not the end of the day...let's go, son."

'I talk to the walls...'

Cheers,
