LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT

KwaZulu-Natal: South Africa: The top of the Tugela Falls, the world's second highest...someone forgot to turn on the tap. Big surprise! (Beyond the chain ladders and the Sentinel).

'LAZAROW WORLD HIKE-ABOUT: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HIKE-ABOUT?'

Hike-about is an adventure that commenced June 2010. After storing our household movables, ridding ourselves of a house but retaining our 'home' together, we set off with the purpose of hiking in different parts of the world, not forgetting the home country, the USA.

Our primary focus is hiking to mountain peaks but any challenging hike will do just fine. Extended stays enable us to enjoy and experience living in various places amongst differing cultures. Hike-about has evolved into a way of life. It's also a process of discovery, both the world and ourselves.

We work and live 'on the road' but return to the city in which our grandchildren reside, every couple of months. This provides us the wonderful opportunity to be with them as well as a child or two, even three and of course, friends.

By the end of 2023, the blog contained over 1,560 hikes (less than that actually undertaken), each a set of pictures with stories and anecdotes from the trails. An index to the right allows the viewer to identify earlier experiences.

Finally, we are often asked about the journey's end.
O
ur reply, as accurate as we can state, is: "When we are either forced to cease through health issues or the enjoyment level no longer reaches our aspirations, we will hang up the boots."

"A Life Experience As No Other: Dare to Seize the Day Together", published by Fulton Books, depicts our life on the road and mountains until the beginning of 2017. It has developed 'exponentially' since then.

New Zealand and Australia: Our last visit displaying some photographs of adventures during 2017.

The reason for publishing this blog, a selection of pictures from our last visit to New Zealand some 7 years ago, is that while one never forgets memorable experiences, it's not the same as remembering them.

'Out of sight, out of mind' is the phrase bandied around. We have visited New Zealand 7 times with Australia included in the trip twice. We loved every visit but then seemed to lose interest after conclusion of the last visit. Why? I suppose it depends on the alternatives. Discovery of new places, different cultures and the need for other challenges makes the most sense in providing an answer. Then suddenly, the thought of returning is interesting. Following a little more excitement about the idea, it becomes a must. We are probably in that phase of the cycle now which amounts to planning, a little more analysis and then a decision.

While we have thousands of pictures spanning more than fourteen years, we don't get around to seeing more than a few. Thus, the display of these is refreshing and acts as a potential trigger for a return visit. We hope it occurs. Then again, we are fortunate the decision is in our hands...excuse me, in our boss's hands. What do you say, Jen?

As the pictures selected are from only a single trip to New Zealand, many other places, mountains, lakes and towns are not shown, and of those displayed below, a mere handful (all are from NZ unless otherwise indicated.)

Outside Wellington.
Somewhere on the Abel Tasman.
Certainly, a highlight...Mount Ngauruhoe, a black volcano lit by the breaking sun.
Reaching half-way and then peaking on Avalanche summit.
Peaking on an incredible mountain.
Alford Peak.
Jen making her way on Mount Bealy.
Grampian Peak, Beronia Mountains, somewhere near Melbourne.
Scared the youngster away...the advantage of having such 'frightening' muscles. I told him the peak was not big enough for both of us...then I left.
Castle Hill Region.
Mount Fox.
Flying off at the handle on the Pinnacle somewhere near Melbourne, Australia.
Mount Rosea.

New Zealand does not suffer from a dearth of water and lakes.

Volcano country, too...especially so.

Sometimes, a man needs to take a break no matter where he loses (finds) himself.

Robert's Ridge.
Arriving along Tongariro from another approach.

After reaching the peak, followed by a descent, Jen stands before the master...Tongariro.

Robert's Ridge.
Mount Taranaki, a spectacular two days 'fooling around' on this mountain. What an experience. Guess who the fools are?
A view from the peak.

Part of the struggle and that's down.

St. Arnaud.
Tirohanga, Picton.
Tongariro Circuit: One rises to the peak from the other side and descends to the acidic pond. A dip will remove for than just sweat and pimples.
Typical New Zealand...makes everything look attractive.

Early morning surprise as the sun turned the black surface golden.

Waikaremoana, Wellington, taken from our hut on a multi-day (night) hike.

Cheers,

Jenni and Jeffrey
