There are few places in the world or, at least in our experiences, where a person knows something special is likely to occur. For us, it's in Boulder City, around Black- and Red Mountain. These two relatively low but enjoyable hiking edifices provide stunning views of Lake Mead, Las Vegas and the surrounding mountains of Arizona and Nevada. It is a remarkable place. Since this segment of Hike-about began, we have undertaken eleven hikes. On each one, we have sought to spot bighorn sheep, majestic creatures, in our opinion. No luck. However, while moving up the mountain close to sunset, we heard the gentle sound of a stone being dislodged somewhere above us. We looked up and lo-and-behold, the first bighorn of the trip stared at us. We kept still, gazing at the critter, while trying to remove the camera from the bag. We were able to get 3 pictures although one was poor. Thereafter, we came across another two on the opposite side of the mountain. Fortunately, the doe was strangel...

At the trailhead , we could barely see each other. This presented a number of problems because who would carry the breakfast. Should we become separated, one of us would be without brunch. That is indeed a serious issue when traveling with the editor. Unfortunately, we took a different trail from that which we sought and ended up hiking nearly 9 miles without reaching our intended destination. However, patience has its rewards and we were fortunate to catch glimpses of wonderful scenes. Three days later, we reached Black Mountain peak (after returning to the trail rather than wondering for 3 days) and enjoyed both an exciting hike and wonderful views. Barrel of cactus laughs if one landed in these 'guys'. Curtain rose and quickly fell for most of the hiking period. Getting close to the desert 'floor', another spectacular place and hike. Backdrop of San Bernardino Mountains one fine winter's day. You know your face tells a different story from you heart or stomach after the female ranger, when asked for directions to the trailhead, suggested that the hike is rated strenuous. What's unsaid is that 'you two old people should consider taking a stroll amongst the trees, get a cup of tea and perhaps have a snooze'. Well, the times are changing and so we considered her words of caution, broke down and cried, wiped our eyes and headed for the 10.5 mile hike with only about 1,800 feet cumulative elevation gain. It gave me great pleasure not to mention that the editor climbed 3,500 feet the previous week in her stride. While we are getting older, it appears we may have collected some maturity along the way.
