56.08 Tonto Basin, Arizona: A Bridge over the Roosevelt, Ted, and access to Mill Ridge Trailhead.

  We've never had the desire to ride in a motorboat on the dam although we like the periodical paddle in a kayak. However, a large lake as the Roosevelt holds less attraction than, say, paddling in a place like Page where there are tributaries, canyons and fascinating places of interest viewed from a boat. Nevertheless, the views of Roosevelt Lake from the surrounding mountains are hard to beat--they are gorgeous and one of our favorites.    With that mindset, our landlord, Ron, invited us to join him and another local, Robert. We took advantage of a rest day and joined the two residents who have only lived in Tonto for 1 and 3 years respectively.    Ron is an ideal host, a decent person and extremely useful with his hands. 56.11 Arizona: Tonto Basin: A hike on an overgrown trail that did not pan out quite as expected.

Setting the scene to establish what part of the world we find ourselves. Roosevelt Lake/Dam. An overgrown trail that set the scene for a prickly beginning. We changed direction after nearly an hour and had to find amusement elsewhere. The water heater at our little house in the desert (delightful place—don't want to leave) failed. Thereafter, the water was shut off. Fortunately, we were able to hydrate later that morning. Camp Reno: 'Sign of the times': Established to 'keep an eye' on the Apaches in 1868. You can, despite the age, notice she has worn relatively well—the sign, too. A stockade wall where naughty girls are locked. Be careful, Girl. With his back to the wall, just contemplating Mount Ord is enough to bring on fatigue. 'I talk to the trees, but they don't hear me; I implore the stock market...hmm! Worse than trees.' It's all too much for him and so he throws a tantrum. The last thing a person wants to take......
